The pub itself dates from at least 1744, so it's older than the canal.
A hand-coloured picture which I found
Then, in the 1930s, it was rebuilt to look like this
It even had a lido
But what does it look like today? I went to take a closer look.
The Stewponey pub was demolished to build these very modern apartments.
But round about, there's still plenty of older things to see. All these pictures were taken within about 800 yards of the old Stewponey site. This is the "new" bridge over the canal, carrying the A458
From the new bridge, looking at the old one
The British Waterway buildings at Stewponey lock
The octagonal former toll house (plus spelling mistake! Where's the "e"?)
The unusual circular weir carrying away the overflow from the lock.
More canal buildings.
Stourton Castle through the gloom
Stourton Bridge
Looking up towards Stourbridge
A runner by the canal signposts
Stourton locks
These two locks are so close together, the water from one lock has to run off into a sidepound. Without it, the next lock down would overflow.
This is the bridge over the A449, just yards from the Stewponey - showing how ugly concrete can be as a building material
The lock mechanism
These two mallard were asleep until I passed. Sorry, ducks!
Stourton top lock, with views over the the A449
A shadow selfie!
