Aston, from Farmers Bridge - the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal

On a grey day, I did the next section of my walk - I'd started at Smethwick, Galton Bridge. (For the previous sections see the links at the bottom)
As you can see, it's very near major Birmingham locations. For this section I walked down the 11 locks of the Aston Flight on the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal.

I posted this picture before, but it highlights the difficulty of photographing round here - I don't like showing all the graffiti: the area deserves better.

Although urban (and a dull day) there was plenty of autumn colour about.

Hooray - a lock gate without graffiti!

The canal is still quite hemmed in by buildings.

"Underground" caverns again - under bridge really.

The canal goes past these gas holders, which I've mostly seen from the motorway

There's still some industry here

A modern set of buildings with a mini lock gate in their grounds.

Beautiful colours - the towpath is well used by cyclists.

This appealed to me: a pattern in the brickworks. "GF Compressors...

...welcomes you to Heartland"

Getting to the end of the walk, the last lock and the final bridge come into view

Thimble Mill Lane Bridge - the very name tells a story of lost industry

Perhaps this was once a thimble mill?

Just by the last bridge is Aston Station, where I caught a train home - convenient!
There's so much to see along canal towpaths: more people should give them a try.
Walk details: from Smethwick Galton Bridge to Aston is about 7 miles, which includes a walk round Gas Street Basin. The wayfinding is easy - just follow the canal - and the area is well-served with public transport links so you don't have to retrace your steps. The hardest bit is finding the canal you want at Galton Bridge, because there are two very close together. For preference, take the higher route - but you can easily swap between the two if you find yourself on the wrong one.
